Meg Strickland: Why I love skating…

How many times do you hear about other girls figure skating? How about how many times you hear about softball, soccer or basketball? Figure skating would be the minority. This makes figure skating unique, challenging, independent, but, at the same time, very rewarding. Figure skating combines the elements of dance, balance, and strength. You have your own way to interpret the music on the ice. The competitive rush that you feel against other skaters drives you to skate faster, stretch further, and jump higher. It is the most rewarding moment when you when your hard work pays off and you land your jump that you’ve been working on for a long time. It is a sport where you don’t have to rely on anyone but yourself to get the gold but there is still a team there supporting you. Figure skating is also played in your head. In order to win a competition, you have to win the battle in your head before you win on the ice. This makes it even more challenging but beneficial in life. It gives you knowledge and education on how to do something on your own and take care of yourself. I get so much more out of figure skating than just a pretty dress and cool program. It has taught me to be independent, unique, challenged, and tough mentally and physically. (Bruises hurt!) This is why I love skating. — Meg Meg Strickland, a Sycamore Ice Skating Club member, has passed her preliminary tests and is a junior coach in our Learn to Skate...
